A Promise Kept, a Book Discovered
My mom and I went to Paris this summer. Just the two of us. The trip of a lifetime for sure. Around 50 years ago, my mom went on a trip through Europe with her grandmother. Part of our family is from the Swiss Alps and part is from France, so my Great Grandma took my mom to visit family and see Europe. When they got to Paris, Grandma Angie started to feel a little sick so they returned home but Grandma made my mom promise to go back. She did. 50 years later, she and I went to Paris. We walked 30,000 steps a day, went to dozens of museums and churches, toured the gardens, and of course, watched the Eiffel tower light up. After we went through Notre Dame, we walked across the street to Shakespeare and Company. That’s where I picked my next book for Marked and Mailed. I should say, I asked an employee to pick a book for us to read. And that’s how we arrived at “Intimacies” by Katie Katamura. I know nothing about it. I haven’t read the ending or the summary. I don’t know if it has a happy ending. I don’t know the characters. I guess we’ll find out as we go. Hopefully, it’s not as uncomfortable as Yesteryear.
