The Art Thief: Love, Lies, and Recess Drama
More Art Thief. I can’t decide how I feel about Stephane and Anne-Catherine’s relationship and her role in it all. Was she a love struck teenager who got involved in an abusive relationship and couldn’t get out for a decade? Did she love the thrill and excitement of traveling all over Europe stealing old shit? Did she think that eventually he would have enough pieces to admire and she would be enough? Were they going to start a life together after a few heists? Piecing this story together is a lot like the story telling after recess in middle school. Who said, who said. How much of it is lies? From all of them. It’s the kind of recess drama you walk away from thinking, “I have no idea which parts of these stories are true. How much of this is lies? Let’s get to greatest common factors.” I’m grateful I’ve been able to walk through the Louvre and not thought about what it would be like to take Winged Victory to my attic. To be fair, that would probably require a crane not a trench coat or Anne Catherine’s purse.
