The Little Treasures Between the Pages

When I was a kid, digging into our stockings was my favorite part of Christmas morning. Just when the morning’s activities were coming to an end, the traditional surprise remembrance of— “Wait! Stockings!” Stockings with mini treasures tucked inside. I don’t think it was the items themselves that held the appeal, as much as the mystery of what would be found next. I experience a similar thrill looking through the pages of an annotated book when it returns from its trip through the book club. While I’m a little jealous of its visits with my friends, getting to read the messages gained along the way is the next best thing. Mel’s signature green all-caps notes, with the occasional doodle, always make me smile and reflect. Cass’ purple pen captures her enthusiastic reactions and heartfelt hope for a happy ending. And in the pink, there are Jill’s connections to characters and our lives outside the pages. So many mini treasures to look forward to finding. This is my favorite part.
