You Haven’t Really Read It If It’s Not Annotated…

This poster in my classroom has long been a reminder for students that there’s value in interacting with what we read. While some book lovers get a little squeamish about writing in novels, what better way to show respect for an author’s words? These messy, beautiful maps in the margins have always helped me authentically engage in academic reading. These days the conversation has a different focus and feel. Jill’s creation of “Marked and Mailed” merged some of my favorite things: “talking” with a great book and with my best friends. Now, the voice in my head when I read isn’t just my own.
