The Night We Lost Him: Not the Thriller I Expected
Finished The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave
Well that was unexpected. I started this book right after finishing Weyward and man I should have read the blurb before reading the book. Don’t get me wrong, it was good but again not what I thought I was getting into. I was expecting a thriller but that’s not what I got. What I got was more of a family drama with an underlying love story. But what a love story it was.
This book had me hooked from pretty early on. I was very invested in each storyline, it was like steaming hot tea delivered from my best friend. It felt like a guilty indulgence, like watching trash TV. I turned on the audiobook every chance I got, I even volunteered to walk the dog so that I could have more time listening to the book.
This was the second book I read in the last few weeks that’s about a love story that spans decades, but it takes place in the background of other love stories. The main characters have partners and intimate relationships with other people, but then in the background is the separate love story between the two main characters. It made me sad thinking about meeting the love of your life at a young age but it being the wrong time, orbiting that person for decades and never being able to wholly be with that person. It must be devastating.
I don’t know. But I do know that it was good and I’ll gladly read the next Laura Dave book I come across.
